Battery Replacement Completed – But New Battery Still Draining Fast
There is a known motherboard, battery drawdown issue with both the iPhone 3G and 3Gs. This problem causes the battery to drain fast even in standby mode overnight. Battery replacement will not fix this particual issue and if you move the motherboard to a different iPhone the problem follows the motherboard. There are 2 ways to deterine if you are experinecing this problem.
- Replace the battery with a new one and see if both the old and new batteries behave the same way (battery drains quickly)
- Determine if your iPhone loses a large amount of change in standby mode (overnight)
Note: You should only lose between 5 - 10% battery capacity in a 10 hour period during standby
These 2 items will tell you if you have a motherboard battery draw issue. There is no easy repair option short of replacement of the motherboard or the power regulator chip on the board. The capacity drawdown in standby mode is the biggest symptom of this power issue.

iPhone Rebooting at Apple Icon
There’s a small chance after you perform an iPhone battery replacement on the 3G or 3Gs the iPhone will continuously reboot. The reboot occurs at the Apple icon or symbol so it never completely displays the unlock option screen. The frequency of this issue is less than 5% after the battery replacement. Reloading the iOS and replacing the system board does not resolve the issue.
The cause of this issue is a defective or broken proximity sensor which is located in the LCD glass touch screen. Disconnect the proximity sensor which is connector #3 on the system board and see if the iPhone will boot correctly. If it does, than replace the proximity sensor.

Do I have an iPhone 3G or 3Gs?
The iPhone batteries are unique and different between the 3G and 3Gs. These batteries are not interchangable between the two models so care needs to be taken when ordering a replacement battery.  These two iPhone are nearly identical except for a key distigushing factor. The lettering that spells “iPhone” on the back of the case is gray on the 3G. The 3Gs model has “iPhone” lettering that is mirrored (identical to the Apple symbol on the back). This is the easiest way to distinguish between the iPhone 3G and 3Gs models.

iPhone Battery Replacement or Buy External Battery or Sell iPhone
iPhone battery capacity will slowly diminish over time. At some point, the iPhone battery will no longer meet the users power demands and a decision will need to be made. There are 3 options available and each has it’s own benefits and drawbacks.
iPhone Battery Replacement
This is the most cost effective option and eliminates the bulky battery pack associated with an external iPhone battery. However, it does take moderate technical skills to perform the battery replacement. To help, there are some really effective iPhone battery replacement videos that will increase your comfort level.
iPhone Battery Extender
The external iPhone battery packs are easy to use but generally cost more than internal batteries. These batteries are usually 1 to 1.5 times the capacity of the internal battery. These external batteries are either bottom connecting or full case design. You gain the benefit of the internal battery plus the external battery life. The drawback is the additional bulk of the battery pack and most full case designs will have some impact on radio antenna reception.
Sell My iPhone
The last option is to sell your iPhone on Craigslist or eBay. If you don’t want to deal with the sales hassle and are looking for a quick turnaround we recommend Gazelle.com. They provide a fair price based on the condition and market value of the iPhone. Read more about Gazelle’s specific iPhone buy back offerings here.

Battery Won’t Charge & No Sync
If you have an iPhone that won’t charge the battery and is not recognized by your computer there’s a good chance the problem is the charge dock connector. Make sure to try connecting the iPhone to a different computer and use a different charge cable.
The charge dock connector replacement difficulty level varies on each iPhone. iPhone 2G is the most difficult. The 3G and 3Gs is medium difficulty but still requires soldering. The solder connection is for speaker and mic. Neither of these replacements should completed by a novice.
In some rare cases, the system board can cause the iPhone battery not to charge. We would estimate less than 5% of the charge failures are due to the system board.

iPhone 2G Battery Replacement Reality
If you face the unfortunate task of replacing the battery on your iPhone 2G prepare for the worst. This was Apple’s first iPhone and it’s not service friendly. Our company actually stopped performing Pro-Installations because of the amount of time and effort to replace the battery. Also, 20% of the devices serviced experienced some other hardware related issues after reassembly. Everything is difficult on this replacement including case removal, battery extraction and the soldering process. Here are the main tips on replacing the iPhone 2G battery.
1) Follow the replacement video on www.iphonebatteryrepair.com
2) Plastic tools don’t work for opening the case
3) Leverage the side out the a flat head screw driver to remove the back cover (expect some damage to the case)
4) When leveraging the battery out be careful of the ribbon connector under it
5) Keep the red battery wire in the heat shrink wrap until it’s ready to be soldered in place
6) Use an exacto knife to remove the glue covering the battery solder connections
7) Don’t pull up on the battery wires until the solder melts. If the solder connectors lift off the system board it toast and you’ll need a new system board
What was your experience with the iPhone 2G battery replacement? Congratulations to anyone that successfully performed the replacement. Consider yourself an expert!

Connector Assembly Techniques
There’s a technique for making ribbon connections on the iPhone system board. For wide connectors, you need to press on each side of the connector head. You should feel a click sensation when it becomes properly seated. When in doubt, unseat the connector and try again.

Not All iPhone Batteries Created Equally
Buyer beware! As part of www.AmpJuice.com  we perform testing on all different types of batteries. Battery Benchmark is the iPhone software we use to measure battery capacity. Many generic brand batteries could be mislabeling capacity in order to sell more batteries. We specifically tested these “higher” capacity batteries. We found the performance of these batteries to be average or below average levels. Keep in mind Apple spends millions of dollars on battery research and development. If it were possible to safely install a higher capacity battery this would have been included in the original design.
Even more disturbing is a few of the manufactures do not include the battery system board interface connector. This battery type requires you to unsolder the connector from the old battery and re-solder to the new one. There are a total of 8 solder connections that need to be made. AVOID this battery! Below is what this particular series of batteries looks like. Our experienced lab technicians have tried to install and solder the individual floating “copper” connection points but failed each time.Â
What was your experience installing this type battery type?
